Introduction to a Future Public Relations Practitioner

Hi everyone! My name is McKenna Roberts and I'm a junior at the University of Oklahoma. I'm majoring in public relations and minoring in enterprise studies. My favorite thing about my major is the fact that it has a very broad range of opportunities for me to choose from in the future when I decide to pick a career or area to focus on. As of right now, my most important goal is to graduate on time in the spring of 2019. For my career, I hope to find a job that best fits my interests. I would like to possibly work for a sports team, fashion PR firm, or any public relations job that allows me to travel.

My favorite pet that I have had is my sister's dog, Trixie, who is a thirteen-year-old Shih Tzu. She has been in my life for over half of my life.

When I'm not at school, you can usually find me at my job, which is a restaurant in Norman. I have worked as a server for three years and it's been the best job in various ways. I've met many wonderful  people and formed great friendships. Aside from that, in my free time I love to spend time with my family, my boyfriend, and my friends. Whether it's going to the movies, concerts, the lake, any sports events, or just hanging out at home, I love spending time with all of them.

Speaking of concerts, my favorite concerts to attend are country music concerts. I like red dirt and Texas country. I've met my favorite artist, Aaron Watson, a couple of times and I've been to quite a few of his concerts.

My favorite food is Italian food. Specifically, I love chicken alfredo and chicken parmesan the most. My favorite restaurant in Norman is BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse. My friends and I love to meet up there when college gets stressful to take a little break.

That's just about all the interesting things about my life right now, but I can't wait to keep updating my blog!

  1. Hey McKenna, I love your blog layout! Your pictures of your sister's dog are so cute. What restaurant in Norman do you work at? I served for about a year in Norman. I agree that you meet some really awesome people through this industry. I also share your passion for hanging out with the people you love. That is what I'm doing in most of my free time as well. Interestingly enough, I have never been to a concert before in my life, so I am jealous that you have been able to attend a few. Good luck with your junior year and your career search!

  2. Public relations seems like such a good field to be in right now, McKenna! The whole world of marcomm has really exploded in the past 10 years or so. Since I am interested in social media for education, I read a lot of marcomm and SEO blogs too, and I learn a lot from them. Maybe you will want to do a PR-inspired project for this class! In Indian Epics last semester there was a really fun PR project about a PR firm that existed in ancient India; you might get some fun ideas from looking at that one: Image.PR: India's highest ranked PR Firm. And your Trixie is adorable! I have a long-haired grey-and-white cat: it would be fun to see the two of them side by side (although my cat is kind of a scaredy-cat who is none too fond of dogs; we took her in as a stray and it's pretty clear she had some bad experiences out there on her own before she came to live with us). Because she is all grey and white we named her Possum: Possum picture. Maybe Trixie will appear in some of your storytelling for this semester! :-)

  3. Hi there McKenna! OK, so many cool relatable parts of your introduction. First, thanks for the pictures of the dog. Not much more gets my attention faster than pictures of pets :) The fact that you are minoring in enterprise studies is so interesting! I have never heard of that before. My family tried so hard to get me to go for a PR major, but I decided to stay in the direction of health, but here I am three years later and pursing a career in the 'public relations' of health promotion. As for your love of going to music festivals, I am in the same boat girl! However, I have never gone to a country music festival, but recently I have been getting more and more into country music, and maybe something like Red Dirt will get put on my to-go list :) It is super nice to meet you!

  4. Hi McKenna!
Trixie is so cute! I love dogs especially old dogs. This is my third year at OU as well and I am not sure what job I will get either. What is your favorite food at BJ's? My favorite is their classic burger. I am not a huge fan of country music, but I have heard that country concerts are the best concerts to go to. What was your favorite concert you have been to?

  5. Hi McKenna!
I really enjoyed reading your introduction and your future career plans sound so interesting and exciting! Your dog, Trixie, is so cute and I really liked how you included multiple pictures of her in your post. I also worked as a server when I was in high school and my freshman year of college. It can be a lot of work but you do form strong friendships and get to meet a lot of people. I’m looking forward to seeing what else you post to your blog!

  6. Hi McKenna! You seem to have a good idea about what you want to do in your future. I am a Marketing major and worked at the Four Seasons Resort in Dallas this past summer. I spent sometime in their PR department and it was very intriguing. You should think about looking into that. It is unique because in the hospitality industry you can move around to differnt resorts, you may just have to start at a job that does not relate to PR at first and slowly work your way up to the PR department. Good luck!

  7. Hi McKenna! I think we may have had Spanish together with Professor Ankenman last year? Trixie is so cute! My dog will be 12 this year and I am not prepared for that. I love BJ's too! My friends and I just discovered Pizookie Tuesdays, where all regular sized pizookies are just $3! We make up excuses to go all the time now. I think it's really cool that you want to work with sport teams or fashion PR in the future and those two are perfect if you want to travel a lot. Can't wait to get to know you better throughout the semester!

  8. Hi Mckenna!
I really admire your future goals, that would be a great job if you got to travel. Your sister’s dog is too adorable! I work in a restaurant too, I have been working there for 5 years. Where do you work in norman? That’s so cool that you got to meet your favorite artist multiple times. Wow, we have a lot in common. My favorite food is Italian too so that’s why I started working as a server in an Italian restaurant.

  9. Hi McKenna! I like the fact that you enjoy your major due to the number of opportunities it can give you. That is a main reason why I am an Entrepreneurship major. Your sister’s dog is adorable and I laughed when I saw the second picture. BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse is also one of my favorite places to eat at in Norman.

  10. That's a cute dog. I have a Maltese-Shih Tzu-Poodle at home. If you love your sister's dog so much, don't you want a dog of your own? The lake is fun, if you grow up in a smaller town, the lake is the place to be. BJ's certainly has the best pizzookies around. A great birthday spot, for sure. Very fun.

  11. Hey McKenna! First of all I want to start by saying that I love the picture of your sisters dog, she looks like an awesome little pupper and the goodest of girls! Secondly its great that your doing PR and enjoying it, I hope it takes you to many wondrous and exciting places in your life. I, myself, am an advertising major and have probably passed you in Gaylord a time or two without knowing it. I also really like your style in food and music.

  12. Hi Mckenna! Your dog is literally an angel and the cutest thing I have ever seen - we need so many more dogs in college!! I'm so stoked that you're a PR Major and so focused on graduating in time! Since you're so focused on that I know you will definitely be able to do that. I'm also a bit of a BJs groupie myself - its just nice to have somewhere you can invite all your friends and everyone will find something they like. And the Pizookies aren't bad either! Sending you happy thoughts for Midterms!

  13. Hi McKenna! Just reading about fettuccini has my mouth watering! SO good! Also, that's so awesome that you are focusing your career around another passion of yours! I am in the same boat in the fact that I hope to get the opportunity to travel with my job in the future.
Thank you so much for sharing and I look forward to reading your story!!

  14. Hey McKenna! I love that picture of your sister's dog, she is so cute! I am such a dog person so I love that this is your favorite pet as well. It's cool to see that you are excited about your job and what the future holds. I too was a server and that was by far one of the coolest jobs I've had with many great people. Anyways good luck with your junior year, and finishing up everything here at OU! And happy blogging!

  15. Hi McKenna! Trixie is so cute! Italian food is also my favorite. You should definitely try Victoria’s if you haven’t already. It’s on Campus Corner. You’ll love it if you love Italian food. BJ’s is always a good place to catch up with friends. Pizookies are a classic. It must’ve been such a cool experience to meet someone you follow. What’s your favorite Aaron Watson song?

  16. Hey there McKenna! It seems that you have quite the busy life! I admire your determination to graduate and take care of your studies. It seems like you will have quite a bit of options when looking for a job. That is really cool! I am a big country music fan myself. I love George Strait and have been to a couple of his concerts! Those concerts were definitely a highlight for me.

  17. Hi McKenna! PR seems like a great major for someone who has so many interests and likes people! It's nice that you'll have so many options to explore after graduation. Trixie is adorable; thanks for sharing those cute pictures. Two of my closest friends both have pets named Trixie, which is kind of funny. I love Italian food too. I studied abroad in Italy last year and I thought I would hate Italian food in America once I got back, but I still love it! Good luck with the second half of your semester!

  18. Hey, McKenna, it's awesome that you love Red Dirt and Texas Country! I actually wrote about Red Dirt in my introduction as well. I have seen Aaron Watson several times, too. Do you ever listen to Reckless Kelly, Cross Canadian Ragweed, or No Justice? If not check them out! If you like local music consider checking out the Patron Aints, they play the early show every Monday night at The Deli on Campus Corner. Hope your semester is going well!

  19. Hey McKenna! Have you ever heard of Terence Mckenna? Although he is kind of insane, he is an incredibly intelligent philosopher and a really good speaker. You don't really see people like that around anymore these days. My mom also has shihtzus, two of them, and the adores them. I personally would have a much bigger dog though. But your dog is really cute and its face look stupidly cute if that makes sense.

  20. Hi McKenna

Wow that dog is so adorable! My friend has a Shih Tzu and it is just the sweetest dog I’ve ever met. I also love country music and I love to go to country concerts! I’ve never heard of Aaron Watson, but I’ll check him out! I’m excited to read your blog over the rest of the semester!

  21. Hi McKenna!

Your sister’s pup is so darn cute. I adore dogs. Do you miss having a dog around? Why did you decide to major in PR specifically? I too would like to be able to travel for work. I hope you find a great job when you graduate this spring. I look forward to reading your stories this semester.

  22. Hi McKenna!

It is so nice to meet you! I love Italian food too! What restaurant do you work at? I think everyone should be a waiter at some point in their life - for you learn so many life lessons while waiting tables!
I too love country music! My dad gets to go to the CMA awards every year for work, and last year he took me! It was such a fun time, but like you there are several artist I like that have not made it that big yet!

  23. Hey McKenna!

I love the fact that you love Italian food. One of my favorite meals is alfredo noodles. Plus who doesn't like the bread at Italian places? I too also love to go to the lake. There is nothing better than a warm summer day where you can just float or even ride in a boat! I wish you the best with the rest of this class and your time at OU.

  24. Hi McKenna!
Nice to meet you! This is the first time I have met someone with a minor in enterprise studies! I never knew that was a thing, but it's always so cool to read about people's journeys and how they came to the decisions that they've made for themselves in college. Your pets are absolutely adorable! I LOVE Italian food as well. One of my favorite places in Norman is Benvenuti's. If you haven't been there, you must go! It is a little on the expensive side, but totally worth it. Well, I am glad I was able to meet you before the semester is over. Wish you the best of luck in these final weeks!

  25. Hey McKenna!
That is also pretty cool that you major gives you such flexibility to work in so many different areas! Chicken alfredo is a very good as well, I have to agree.
Hope you have a great rest of the semester!

  26. Hi Mckenna! I can’t believe I haven’t been to your page before. It’s nice to meet you finally! Trixie looks like a fluffy sweetheart. My chihuahua doesn’t have soft fluffy hair. This would make me sad, but bath time is a whole lot easier with his short, flat-lying hair. I used to have a sheltie, which is basically a little collie, and let me tell you, all that hair was a PAIN. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your finals!

  27. Hi McKenna! So nice to learn a little about you here! Good to meet a fellow Gaylord student (I'm in journalism) — I hope you're enjoying it! Also, your sister's dog is adorable — how often do you get to see her? And I definitely share your affinity for Italian — I know Victoria's and Benvenuti's have some wonderful Italian here in Norman. I hope you have a wonderful dead week, and good luck on all your finals!

  28. Hi McKenna!
It is great getting to know a little about you this late in the semester. It has flew by and I cant believe this is the last week! I am also a huge fan of chicken Alfredo. Its really all I get now at Italian restaurants. My favorite in Norman is definitely Victorias Pasta Shop on campus corner. They make everything from scratch and you can tell! I hope you do well on your finals and everything ends up great on the career hunt!

  29. Hi McKenna! It was great to read a little about you at the end of the semester. Hope things have gone well for you so far, and hopefully you can treat yourself to some yummy Italian food before/during/after finals. Your sister's dog is precious — shih tzus and shih tzu mixes are just so precious to me. So cuddly and sweet, too! Your minor also sounds super cool, I'd never heard of it before! Have a good winter break.

  30. Hello McKenna.
Good luck on graduating on time, wish I could do the same thing haha. The world of PR is something else. Hopefully you get into the field you want. I work in a marketing and public relations department and you find yourself face palming a lot. It is fun though and a great career field to go into. Traveling can be a bit rough when it is for work.
